Default Change fuel pump - Passat 1.6 gasoline(benzin) 1997 Limosine

How did i know it was the fuel pump :
I was driveing home, 23-dec-2010 around 02:15am. When the car suddenly started to brake,
then run normal, then brake, then it ran normal for awhile, then it continuely started to brake,
run, brake run, ewentually all accelleration was gone, and the car stalled. No clue to what was
wrong, by waiting 5 mins the car would start but quickly turn the engine off by it self.

I got hold of the local auto-rescue got my car brought home, and asked around, all said fuel
punp or air intake. Air intake was easy to check, open the filter and look, its fine. then it must
    be the fuel pump. DAMN!

Location varies alot on Passat not only from year to year, but also from model to model in same year.
In this model the limo it is located INSIDE the fueltank, while in the variant its under the backseat.

    The car :

    Step 1 :
On the backseat, lay the backrest down, so you can acces the trunk from inside the car.
flip over the carpet in the buttom, and there you will find a small round cover, with 3 screws.
Unscrew them and remove the cover.

    Step 2 :
Unplug the caple, and the 2 connecting fuel lines, pay attention to how the entire thing is,
    and which tube goes where.

    Step 3 :
Unscrew the large black lid, holding it all in place, this can be extremely tight, i had to
use a piece of wood and a hammer, them i hammered it both thigter and then loose
    until i could unscre it.

Now you can lift the white lid on the tank, carefull not to drop anything into the tank,
its perfectly fine to remove the tubes if possible, and unplug the wires for easyer acces.
    but not nessesary!

    Code:

    Step 4 :
Time to unscre the entire pump, INCLUDING the surround while container,
The entire pump is seated and secured in a round container whit a sort of star
shape on the top part. It can be EXTREMELY thight and feel almost impossible to unscrew.

    Code:

    Step 5 :
Assembly is straight forward, except when fitting it all back, it goes in really smooth.
The pump in the cylinder just slip right in, remember to thighten it. fit all the parts,
tubes and wires again.. and your good to go..
